What is a Biological Assets Valuation (CPC 29/IAS 41) and why valuate them?
Biological asset is any animal or plant, alive, responsible for the production of agricultural products. Examples of plants are soybeans, corn, sugar cane, eucalyptus etc. Examples of animals are cattle, pigs, chickens, etc.
These assets undergo biological transformation throughout their life, that is, the process of growth, degeneration, production and procreation that cause qualitative and quantitative changes in the biological asset.
As a consequence, we have:
- asset changes through:
- growth (increase in quantity or improvement in the quality of the animal or plant);
- degeneration (reduction in quantity or deterioration in the quality of an animal or plant) or;
- breeding (additional generation of animals or plants); or
- production of agricultural products, such as latex, tea leaves, wool and milk.
The gain or loss arising from these changes in fair value, net of selling expenses for biological assets, must be recognized between the beginning and the end of each period and must be included in the income for the year in which it originates.
How is the valuation carried out at fair value?
The biological asset must be measured at fair value less selling expenses at the time of initial recognition and at the end of each accrual period, except when the fair value cannot be measured reliably.
Fair value is measured in accordance with Technical Pronouncement CPC 46 “Measurement of Fair Value”
What is the normative basis for the Valuation of Biological Assets?
The normative basis is the Technical Pronouncement CPC 29, “Biological Assets and Agricultural Product”, correlated with the International Accounting Standards, IAS 41.
